Home performance with energy star.
If you live in non-energy star labeled home, you may be able to
cut your energy bills by 40% ! Besides the savings, you may benefit by
having a home whose indoor air quality is significantly better, and by
having a home that is more comfortable year round !
Home Performance contracting is a holistic approach to solving and
repairing problems in a home. Instead of putting in a larger boiler to
solve low heat issues, we would try to find why the current boiler is
not able to heat the home. If your home has ice damming problems
possibly causing leaks, maybe instead of re-roofing to fix the leak,
we can look for a possible thermal bypass that is allowing heat to get
to the roof.
Most "contractors" will offer a work around for a problem, but not
offer the real solution.
As an example, most insulation contractor's wont know about air
changes per hour and most heating contractors wont be able to test
duct losses measured in 25 pascals, they are limited by traditional
knowledge and tools. There is a saying, if the only tool you have is a
hammer, the world looks like one big nail.
For instance, Home owner request - Replace 6 year old boiler. -Home
owner reason
boiler cannot heat home in the worst of the winter (hydro air system)
and indoor air is very dry.
Plumber Response-
Ok, Ill upgrade the 99,000 btu boiler with a 145,000 btu for $5600
Result, the house may or may not gets warmer, the furnace might just
be able to mask the real cause. Unfortunately heating bills are
through the roof (literally) and the comfort issues are slightly
worse. Cost of replacement and heating 5600 plus additional 800 per
year for oil.
Insulation contractor response-
We can upgrade the insulation in the attic from R11 to R38,
The house now may get warmer but doesn't quite get to temperature in
the coldest of weather. But comfort issues still plaque the home.

Real problem, catastrophic duct leaks in unconditioned attic and
basement. More heated
air is being sent to those areas then the home itself !
