Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. CO is a by product of combustion, with some fuels creating higher levels then others.
CO poisoning can take hours, days or minutes. Levels of CO too low to
set off common house hold alarms, can still be dangerous. Testing for
this gas is always performed and on every home, regardless of work
scope. Before and after all work, a combustion safety test is performed
on all gas and oil fired equipment, as well as electric
ovens. CO is measured in parts per million and we use BPI's
standards to evaluate measured amounts.
Many
homes tested have been found to have CO levels so high that work could
not be started, and appliances that looked fine were producing levels
that could have certainly caused loss of life. The recommended limit for
24 hours is 9 parts per million. During testing, if ambient levels are
35 parts per million or more, the testing must stop, and the building
be ventilated until levels drop.
